Famous Art Recreated Using Faber Castell Pencils

When I first saw this headline I thought – oh that’s been done a hundred times. Then I clicked on the image and realized that it was Vincent Van Gogh’s ‘Terrace Cafe at Night’ created from the actual Faber Castell pencils. What a brilliant way to showcase the pencils and the breadth of color available for artists. Another version of the ad was also created of ‘The Scream’ by Edvard Munch.

Faber Castell has been creating products for artists for many years. To market this product (color pencils) to attract the attention of their target audience they took a unique approach by creating art in such an unexpected way. They show the relevance of the product’s vast color tones and hues as well as showcasing the brand’s personality – creativity and imagination. There have been many other products that use famous paintings to showcase products so this isn’t an original thought but I felt this version is actually the most fitting to the product and they did a great job. Does it show the product benefit? Yes. Is it eye catching and interesting? Yes.

The project created by Olgilvy & Mather Singapore, took 1176 hours and 125,000 pencils. A video was created to show the process used to create the ads, which can be seen here: The Art of Color Pencils Take a moment to watch it.
