As a small business owner, you’ve probably heard many theories on branding, some of them good, some of them bad, some of them ugly. Here are a couple of our favourite branding myths that keep creeping up:

1) MYTH: Branding is Just a Fancy Word for Design

Branding is much more than your logo, website and business card design. Branding is the way your product or service is perceived by the people you want to sell to. Branding is your reputation.

2) MYTH: It’s All About You

Actually, branding has more to do with how your business is perceived by your target market than it does with what you are putting out there. You can’t just have a “if we build it, they will come” attitude. You have to know who “they” are implicitly and you have to know what they want and need, and figure out how they can be approached.

3) MYTH: Branding is for Big Business, Not Small Business

Branding is just as important for small businesses as it is for big businesses. Small businesses with limited resources (such as time, energy and money) benefit from carefully constructing their brand in that they don’t waste their precious resources sending out the wrong signals to the wrong target market.

4) MYTH: Copy Successful Brands and You Will be Successful

Actually, the whole point of branding is to stand out apart from other brands and make a name for your business. Differentiating yourself will take you out of competition with other brands – even if they are bigger and more established – and put you in a league of your own. This is what great branding is all about!
